When it comes to political media coverage, we are used to seeing a fair amount of bias, as well as the damage that it can do. The vile Fox News is essentially against anything progressive, so its slavish support for the president is just a natural fit for its guiding philosophy. A relative newcomer, the reprehensible OAN is simply pro-Trump.
We see these outlets for what they are. They are not really news organizations. They are more in the vein of propaganda arms for this corrupt and morally-bankrupt government. They are the sort of media organizations that promoted the "superior" way of life in the former Soviet Union.
There was a time, once upon a time, when American patriots beheld such practices as wrong.
Nevertheless, reasonably intelligent people are not fooled or swayed by these organizations. When it comes right down to it, they don't really matter that much. They are so obvious, so naked in their purpose, that only a fool would be taken in by them.
Now, the mainstream media, the so-called legitimate ones; they're another story.
It's often said that it's the enemy you don't see coming that is the most dangerous.
Fox News and OAN don't try to hide what they are, and as such, are easy to deal with.
It's the other ones that you really have to watch out for. They claim to be "unbiased," but they're lying, either to us or to themselves. They've somehow, either accidentally or on-purpose, confused being fair with telling both sides of the story.
In 2016, the so-called mainstream media played a huge part in handing the election to Trump. They hammered Hilary Clinton on middling or meaningless matters, while giving short-shrift to major transgressions on the other side.
If you look at this year's campaign coverage, it's happening again.
With all the failures of this administration with regards to the COVID-19 crisis, and with a GOP-controlled Senate that refused months ago to do anything to help struggling Americans, opting instead to go on vacation, the media has resorted to the same both-sides-ism that it did four years ago. When Trump and the GOP suddenly try to pass a stimulus package now, in an effort to buy votes, do we really need to see Wolf Fucking Blitzer hammering away on Nancy Pelosi, trying to get her to cave in and help Trump and the GOP Senators get re-elected? Is that fair? When Trump violates law after law (Hatch Act, anyone?) out in the open where everyone can see, while he continues to ignore the advice of experts by continuing to flout basic safety rules regarding COVID-19, and basically acting like an unhinged loon, is it fair that the media reports on dubious conspiracy theories about Hunter Biden? The president held superspreader events that we know made people sick. He's so arrogant and stupid that he gave COVID-19 to HIS OWN TEENAGED SON! Why are reporters trying to ambush Biden for comments on some half-baked nonsense about Hunter Biden?
The latest outrage is the NBC Trump Town Hall fiasco. This was such an immoral, naked grab for ratings, that even current and former NBC stars have forcefully denounced it.
We have to be aware of this sort of behaviour by the media, and it needs ne be called-out each and every time it happens.
When it comes to the NFL, I've always been a critic of the way the media covers it. The media arm of the league is essentially a propaganda machine, churning out positive stories with great flourish, while burying negative ones. Other media outlets, afraid of losing access, toe the line and act like de-facto cheerleaders for the sport and league.
This has been especially true during this season. The list of teams affected (infected?) by COVID-19 grows weekly. The schedule changes constantly. In reality, there is a very strong element of illegitimacy to this season.
And, yet, the league continues on, and the media continues churning out the stories. We see the reports of players being placed on COVID-reserve lists. Other than that, the league would have us believe that everything is fine.
It isn't.
I'll have more to say about this soon, but for now, I'll just get to the picks.
