Shut it down.
Ok, look…
The president has shown a callous disregard for public safety ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began. He and his supporters’ shameful behaviour has resulted in literally thousands upon thousands of deaths. Republicans have continued to flout good sense, with the idiot-in-chief continuing to hold rallies and official events with no protocols in place to protect even themselves from this contagious, dangerous virus.
Whatever your personal feelings are with regards to the president (as well as other high-placed Republicans) testing positive for COVID-19 this week, I doubt many of you are surprised. I know I’m not.
The NBA, NHL, and even MLB have managed to stage successful comebacks this year, due to imposing strict protocols, and by creating “bubbles” in which athletes and other personnel could be separated from the outside world.
The NFL did what it always does when faced with a serious issue; it paid lip-service to the problem, without actually facing up to the reality. If you look at any team, you see scores of people interacting closely on a daily basis. Players, coaches, trainers, various and sundry other staff. Day after day, these people go out into the world, into their non-football lives and interactions, only to return to the team again.
So, what happens?
A few Tennessee players and personnel test positive for COVID. The league talks about delaying the team’s game against Pittsburgh one or two days. More positive tests occur, and the game is rescheduled for another week. Bye weeks change, other teams’ schedules change. Then there are positive tests on New England and KC. That game has to be cancelled and rescheduled.
Fast-forward to Saturday, and the number of Tennessee players and personnel to test positive is approaching 20, threatening their Week FIVE game, and there are already rumours that at least one other team (New Orleans?) has a COVID case.
Whatever your feelings about what’s happening in the NFL right now with regards to COVID-19, I hope you’re not surprised.
You know I’m not.
Hey, NFL: be better than the president. Be smarter than the president.
Shut it down.
